Our commitment here at Ahia of Ngati Porou Fisheries is that we will only present you with fish that we would serve to our own esteemed guests at home here on the East Coast – Te Tairawhiti.

Only a couple of hundred years ago wars started over this sort of thing around here, so it is a promise that means a lot to us.

There’s no secret to what we do – in fact we try to keep things as simple as possible and let the delicate flavours of the fish we select shine through by locking in the taste and moisture.

It is a complex process to keep things simple.

We have chosen species of fish whose texture and flavour make them especially good smoked.

A little salt, a little sugar where it helps, a little time and sweet manuka smoke.

It ties us with the past because it reminds us of our grandparents when we were young, and now we show our own grandchildren, who will show theirs when we are gone.

It is the taste of our passion for the sea, the taste of our heritage, the taste of our respect for food from the ocean.

Delicious as it is on its own, you can also work with the intense tastes and sensual textures and show your friends and family some creative flair.

To add taste and protein to a salad, our smoked fish range is ready to eat straight from the fridge, and because it is cooked and preserved it stays fresh much longer than uncooked fish if it is kept refrigerated.

For people on Paleo or Atkins diets, this is the sort of food the experts talk about as “satiating”.
